4/30/2007 12:20:00 AM Behind the Scenes by Bridget Scene 1 Doctor(background): Congratulations! It’s a girl! Enter Mother, Father and Joy, attempting to ride a bicycle Narrator: Lie back daughter, let your head be tipped back in the cup of my hand. Gently, and I will hold you. Spread your arms wide, lie out on the stream and look high at the gulls. A dead-man's float is face down. You will dive and swim soon enough where this tidewater ebbs to the sea. Daughter, believe me, when you tire on the long thrash to your island, lie up, and survive. As you float now, where I held you and let go, remember when fear cramps your heart what I told you: lie gently and wide to the light-year stars, lie back, and the sea will hold you. First Lesson by Philip Booth Father: Come here my little princess!(Laughs, embraces Joy and swings her around) Joy: Daddy… What is love? They keep talking about it on television. Father: Love is when someone cares for another person so much that they are willing to do anything for them. Just like I love your mother, and just like I love you! Joy: Oooh…Daddy loves me! Mummy mummy! Did you hear? Daddy loves me! Mother: Haha.. yesh my darling daughter. I heard. I love you too! Joy: Yay! Mummy and Daddy both love me! (gets distracted by man selling ice cream) Daddy daddy, I want an ice cream! (points to vendor offstage) Father: Let’s go get it then! We’ll see if mummy can catch up with us! Mother: Haha.. We’ll see how fast you can run!!! Joy squeals. Father carries Joy and runs. Mother hurries after. Scene 2 Enter Mother, Father trailing behind Mother: Our water supply has been cut, the electricity bills are unpaid. I slog day and night whilst YOU gamble it all away! Father: You think I want to? I can’t help it. All you do is nag. I’m trying alright! Now can you pass me five hundred? Mother: You have the nerve to ask me for money! You’ll probably squander it all away! Don’t you even care about your family? Or maybe you’d rather pay more attention to your OTHER family. Father: Oh don’t be ridiculous and stop making things difficult! You work. Five hundred is peanuts to you! Mother: It is, is it? You think I print money don’t you? I work so hard just to keep the family running and you simply come and raise out your hands like a parasite! Think about that daughter you claim to love if not about me! Her school fees have not been paid and you don’t even have the responsibility to give her her pocket money! Father: Will you quit yakking and just pass me the money?! Both storm out. Enter preteen Joy looking after them. Joy: He left us when we needed him most. Plunged us deep in debts and no way to repay them. Loansharks everywhere. We hid, we ran. We borrowed. We delved greater into debt. Lights out Scene 3 Father(background): I love you my dear daughter. Truly I do. Pause. Anything for you my princess. Pause. Narrator (background): Lie back daughter, let your headbe tipped back in the cup of my hand.Gently, and I will hold you. Enter Joy with friends. Friend 1: My mum’s always so protective. She barely let’s me out of the house! I really envy you Joy, u get all the freedom you want. Friend 2: Yeah, it’s not fair. You get all the luck. The beauty, the brains. I wish I were like you. Joy (laughing): Haha.. be careful what you wish for! Sticks out tongue Friend 1: You just don’t know how fortunate you are. Joy: Maybe I don’t. Laughs. Friend 1: (losing interest) Oh you know what I heard? Reese Witherspoon is dating Jake Gyllenhaal after announcing her splitting up with her husband, Ryan Phillippe! Like how cool is that? Friend 2: laughing Finally someone better for her. I always wondered why people remain in a marriage if there are problems. It’s so simple, divorce! Joy: laughter is forced Yeah man… No point staying in a ruined marriage. So you guys wanna go catch a movie? Heard a great one’s out. Friend 1: Alright! Let’s go! Scene 4 Joy walks to atm machine on stage left Machine (voice backstage): Balance – twenty dollars. Joy sighs, picks up phone and calls Father. Dial tone. Father: (backstage) Hello? Joy: Dad, don’t tell me you haven’t deposited the money? I’ve been living on my own savings since a month ago and I really haven’t got much left! Father: I’ll give it to you soon ok? There’ve been many things going on and I haven’t got the money at the moment. Joy: But… Phone cuts off. Phone rings. Joy: (sighs) Hello? Oh hi grandaunt. He wat? He’s always like that… Oh you mean the loansharks have threatened to lock you in the house? He borrowed from them again?! Why did you pay them? Might as well let him die. Less of a burden on us. He always promises to change. That’s utter bullshit! Don’t pay his debts for him anymore. Let him die! Shrivel and DIE for all I care! Runs out crying. Last Scene Enter Joy Joy: Once, all was beautiful You held me up, when I was feeling blue Chaos reigned in everything But you… You were true. Enter Father Father: I’ll be there for you my princess Joy: You never were Father: I’ll make your dreams come true my daughter Joy: That’s what you say! When once you fed me wheat and rye Now all I get are your dirty lies You say you love me! If only that were true… Father: They are true. Joy: I can’t trust you… I’ll walk away and never return Support myself, I don’t need you You’re more a burden, more a pain Believing you there’s naught to gain. It’s true You and I are THROUGH! Exit Joy Father: (pained, sings) I love you, my sweet flesh and blood Times are bad, finances are hard I wish I could be there for you I wish I could be true I let you down my daughter I promised you the stars Instead I wrecked your life for you I’m sorry If only things were new… I’ll change myself for you Cos I LOVE YOU (spoken) I’ve been a disappointment to you my child. I seem always to let everyone down, my father, my wife, and now, you, my daughter… It’s hard to show how much I love you when there is no means of doing so. Life’s been hard, but that’s no excuse. I try my very best, I truly do. Now, I turn away from you! Into the welcoming arms of another! Into the recesses of sin, gambling, drinking, debt! They embrace me, they love me, they accept me. Out of my life, my past. Out of muy life, out of my mind, out.. Out.. OUT!!!! Exit Joy: (sings, backstage) I love you… Enter Joy Joy: (spoken) Remember when fear cramps your heart what I told you: lie gently and wide to the light year stars, lie back and the sea will hold you. I’m lying daddy, I’m lying. (sits) Where are you daddy? Your daughter needs you, calls you. I see nothing. Not you, not the stars, not anything. Mummy’s here, she needs you too daddy.. come back.. come back… END it was labelled, poetic emo.. wanna guess y? :P haha.. prep for ying n bernard's 20th anniversary today was sooo sweet.. :) on the way home sis n i were pondering.. how issit that some ppl get it all? and how issit that some can last for soo long.. whilst others merely fizzle out.. hmm.. food for thought.. or maybe it comes to the fact that life isn't fair. fulstop. haha.. i dunno really.. on a lighter note, I Love You my dear!!! :D damn i'm always afraid of truly falling.. now i have..it's so scary..
